If you buy medical supplies or equipment for a facility, this is for you. I'm not a clinician or a biomedical engineer. I'm the person whose signature is on the purchase order. Step 1: Translate the request into the actual product category
Most order errors start with vague language. A clinician says 'we need a transfer bench.' Maybe they mean a shower transfer bench. Maybe they mean a bed transfer board. Those are different products, and ordering the wrong one costs time and money.
If you're asking 'what is a Holter monitor?' you're in the right place. Here are the plain-language definitions I use when I'm not sure what is being asked:
- Medline bench transfer: Usually means Medline's shower transfer bench. It's a bath safety aid that sits over the rim of a tub. A person moves from a wheelchair onto the bench, sits down, then swings their legs over the tub wall without having to step over it. It is not the same as a flat transfer board.
- Syringe pump: A programmable infusion device that uses a syringe to deliver small, exact amounts of medication over time. You'll see them in ICUs and NICUs. If a nurse asks for 'a pump for a syringe,' this is it.
- Ultrasonic surgical aspirator: A surgical tool that uses ultrasonic vibration to break up tissue and suction it away while preserving blood vessels and nerves. It's commonly used in neurosurgery and liver surgery, and it's usually a special-order capital item rather than a stock supply.
- Holter monitor: A wearable ECG recorder that tracks heart rhythm continuously for 24 to 48 hours, sometimes longer. It catches irregular heartbeats that a short ECG in a doctor's office can miss.
The question you should ask, before you search Medline's catalog, is not 'what do you want?' It's 'what does the device need to do for a specific patient?' I'd rather spend ten minutes explaining options than deal with mismatched expectations later.
